Description

The drum granulator for seeds DG-SBM 2020 was designed to mechanize seedball production in rural areas. This machine was constructed and tested at Institute of Agricultural Engineering, Tropics and Subtropics Group, University of Hohenheim. The design was a low-cost and simple to enable a feasible local reproduction. The construction of the machine was divided into three major parts, such as metal frame, rotary drum and mechanical system. The metal frame functions as the main structure, where all the machine parts are attached. The rotary drum can be any cylindrical open containers made of metal, plastic or wood. The mechanical system consists of moving parts, such as electric motor, roller, pulley and V-belt, which generate a rotary motion for the drum to form seedballs from a raw material blend (sand, loam, wood ash and seeds). In order to ensure size homogeneity of the seedballs, a perforated shovel with a defined hole diameter could be used to collect the seedballs from the drum. The machine performance could be evaluated at different rotational speeds of the rotary drum using different amount of water addition to the material blend.
