Description

This folder contains a dataset of patient and healthy participant data gathered for studies examining proportional and numerical reasoning in neglect. We examined whether neurological patients with a deficit in line bisection specifically exhibit problems in bisecting a line into two equal parts or whether this deficit is based on a more general problem that also affects the representation of, e.g., thirds or fourths. To this end, we measured four groups: neglect patients with line bisection bias, neglect patients without line bisection bias, patients with a right-sided stroke without neglect, and healthy controls, in several tasks involving horizontal lines: Line bisection, a line 'segmentation task', two number line tasks, and a verbal number bisection task. For each line task, the number in the cell denotes where on the line the mark was placed in centimetres from the left (on a 20cm line). For example, if a cell says "0.9", the mark was placed 9mm from the left end of the line, if it says "12.2", it was placed 122mm from the left end of the line. Columns starting with "4T" denote individual marks of segmenting the line into 4 equal parts, "3T" individual trials of segmenting the line into 3 equal parts. the number following this (1-5) denotes the trial itself (there were up to 5 trials in total, if patients could do so many), and the number after "Prop" denotes whether it is the first, second or third line from the left. E.g., "4T2_Prop3" would denote: The third line from the left (i.e., the 3/4 line) of the second trial of the quarters segmentation task. The "fractions" number line task trials are denoted by the resepctive fraction followed by the trial (again, 1-5): For example, 1DIV3_2 denotes the second trial of marking "1/3". For the "whole numbers" number line task, the number following "BNL" denotes the number to mark, again followed by the respective trial ("BNL6_1" is the first trial of marking 6 on the line). Finally, all columns denoting the German words "Auf" and "Ab" denote number bisection trials where numbers were either said in an increasing order ("Auf") or decreasing order ("Ab"), whereby cells denote the number said by the participant for that trial. Finally, individual R codes were written for each task, as well as individual visualisation codes. The codes should be sufficiently commented and thus do not need further description here.

Steps to reproduce

We ran the aforementioned tasks in the different groups, whereby we first ran each task 3 times, then another 2, to ensure that neurological patients were more likely to do each task at least once before they got tired.
