Olfactory perception of 5α-androst-16-en-3-one among residents of central Russia

A specific anosmia (i.e. significant drop in sensitivity to a distinct odor, while general olfactory acuity remains unaffected) to androstenone (5α-androst-16-en-3-one) is one of the most common in humans with estimates of its occurrence varying from about 30 to 50%. Data were acquired via sensory testing of olfactory perception of 3.13×10-3% androstenone in 807 residents of central Russia (9-84 years old). Odor discrimination approach was used for testing. The participants rated intensity and pleasantness of the perceived odor, and a free odor identification task was included. To our knowledge, we are the first to report word descriptions for the odor of androstenone in residents of Russia. The study population characteristics (viz. age, sex, ethnicity, olfactory abilities, smoking habits, respiratory tract diseases, perfume use, blood group, oral contraception use, pregnancy) were obtained via a survey. In this version of the dataset, minor wording and data code changes were included. We have also added two variables, DISCRIMINATE (0/1) and SUBSET (0/1).
