Average 2016-2018 production values of pollination dependent crops for different world regions
This dataset contains the 2016 to 2018 average production values of pollination dependent crops for different world regions.
Steps to reproduce
Data on the dependence ratios per crop are taken from the FAO (2008) pollinator array table ( for crops with a known dependence ratio >0), which is based on Klein et al. (2007). Crops for which zero or mixed response dependence ratios are reported are excluded. Production quantities of all food crops dependent on animal mediated pollination (67 crops ) for the years 2016 to 2018 are obtained for five world regions (Africa; Asia and Oceania; Europe; Northern America; and Latin America and the Caribbean) from the FAOSTAT database (FAO, 2020). Similarly, producer prices reported in FAOSTAT were extracted for the same crops and time periods for all food crops at the country level to estimate average producer prices for each crop at the region level (calculating simple averages). In some cases, there were not sufficient observations to calculate average regional producer prices. In one instance, for the United States of America and the year 2018, missing price data in the FAOSTAT were filled with national statistics (USDA, 2019). This was necessary, as the North American region comprises only four countries (see Table B2 of the supplementary materials in Lippert et al. (2020) for a country-region correspondence table). For all remaining cases, a simple replacement rule was applied: If within a year no producer price for a given crop is reported within a region, the crop’s world average producer price (computed at the individual country level) is assumed to be a reasonable approximation. In four instances (Brazil nuts, cashewapple, kola nuts and melonseed) there are no producer prices reported across all countries and years. These crops are also of minor relevance at the regional and global scale and were valued with prices equal zero. The crop and region specific production values are computed by multiplying producer quantity times producer price for the years 2016-2018. The final database comprises the simple mean of the 2016-2018 production values and dependence ratios at the region and crop levels. References: FAO, 2008.
