Description

In this prospective cohort study, adult patients who underwent elective intracranial surgery under general anaesthesia and were admitted to the intensive care unit (ICU) were consecutively enrolled. Delirium was assessed using the Confusion Assessment Method for the ICU (CAM-ICU) at three time points: within several hours after ICU admission and in the morning on postoperative day one and day three. Emergence delirium was diagnosed as the first CAM-ICU-positive time point. Postoperative delirium was diagnosed as CAM-ICU positivity on either postoperative day one or day three. Patients were classified into groups with and without postoperative delirium. Data before the delirium assessment on postoperative day one were collected for univariate and multivariate analyses to determine the risk factors for postoperative delirium.
