In this paper, the effective paths to improve area development project performance are explored by conducting a comprehensive analysis of the relationship between project manager competency and area development project performance. A conceptual model consisting of seven research variables and 14 hypothetical paths was developed through a questionnaire survey of 421 civil engineering project managers with experience in Sichuan regional development. Subsequently, hypothesis testing was conducted using structural equation modelling, and prior constructs leading to high performance were investigated through fuzzy-set qualitative comparative analysis.

Steps to reproduce

This questionnaire survey was conducted through both online and offline methods. A total of 421 samples were collected from the pilot study, excluding questionnaires that were excessively time-consuming or hastily completed, as well as those with evident missing or incorrect information. Finally, 392 valid samples were obtained. Respondents were required to rate their level of agreement for the different question items under each variable. The measurement in this study utilizes a 5-point Likert scale with scores ranging from 1-5, with 1 indicating complete disagreement, 2 indicating basic disagreement, 3 indicating neutrality, 4 indicating basic agreement, and 5 indicating complete agreement.
