Gait Parameters of Patients with Parkinson's disease with and without Arithmetic Cognitive Load

Dual-task (DT) paradigms have been used to assess comprehensive dysfunction related to cognitive and motor functions of Parkinson's disease (PD). Gait and cognitive performance of PD patients in DT are significantly different from those of healthy people. To show the differences, the gait parameters of patients with PD with and with out Arithmetic Cognitive Load are collected and those data could be used to compared with those of healthy people, which are matched and included in the dataset,too.


Steps to reproduce

Gait parameters without arithmetic cognitive load 2min-Single Walking Test (2min-SWT) was assessed in an obstacle free, 25-m long, 4-m wide corridor. Participants walked for 2 min at a comfortable pace without any secondary task, he or she was allowed to turn at the end of the corridor. The gait parameters are measured by wearable inertial sensors. Gait parameters were recorded by Ambulatory Parkinson Disease Monitoring (APDM) systema (Mobility Lab v2, APDM, Portland, USA) . The system consists of a computer, a blue tooth receiver, and six inertial sensors (5 cm×5 cm×1.5 cm; 50g), carried on wrists, metatarsal bases of feet, chest, and waist. Data are delivered from the sensors to the computer by blue tooth receiver in real time. During 2min walking measurement, over 20 parameters of two sides in each gait cycle were recorded, including cadence, double support, gait cycle duration, gait speed, elevation at midswing, lateral step variability, circumduction, foot strike angle, toe off angle, single limb support%, stance, step duration, stride length, swing%, terminal double support%, toe out angle, coronal, sagittal, and transverse range of motion of lumbar and trunk, arm swing velocity and range of motion, angle, velocity, steps in turn, initial contact, toe off, midswing. The processes were taken by an engineer and a neurology doctor, the abnormal performances, such as stop walking, incorrect performance due to forgotten the tasks, and so on, were recorded. Gait parameters with arithmetic cognitive load During this 2min-walking and arithmetic dual-task (2min-WADT), participants were asked to hear and orally answer arithmetic questions simultaneously while he or she was walking. ASAS results were recorded by a sound recorder, and gait parameters were assessed by APDM. When the participants behaved unexpectedly, as for stopping walking or answering, the experimenter would remind them once after 3 seconds. If the reminding is useless, the patient should drop out of the study.
