Description

There is limited literature regarding the transition of a newly qualified Radiographer into the workforce. This evaluation reviewed the current mentorship/preceptorship practises performed within Northern Ireland Trusts and sought opinions of Radiology Managers who prescribed, and newly qualified Radiographers who received, the programme. It established the effectiveness of mentorship/preceptorship practises currently delivered regionally, and determined whether it satisfied both parties in offering a thorough and consistent approach, capable of developing a confident and by measurable outcome, competent workforce. Benefits and limitations were identified in the current practise cited by those involved in the mentorship/preceptorship strategies and the discussion offers suggestions towards adopting/ creating a regional practice similar to that practiced in other parts of the UK. This in turn would promote best practise in welcoming the newly qualified Radiographer into their inaugural post and ensure comparable competency in practise across Northern Ireland.
