Biomarkers in bivalve mollusks and amphipods for assessment of effects linked to cyanobacteria and elodea: mesocosm study

Description

This study focuses on question how cyanobacteria and dense elodea beds solely and in combination affect the health and reproduction of aquatic invertebrates. We suggested that cyanobacteria thought extracellular metabolites production and dense elodea beds led to deterioration of physicochemical conditions, as well as the combined effects of both factors, might influence the general adaptability and reproductive health in aquatic animals. Two common benthic species, the detritivory amphipod Gmelinoides fasciatus and the deposit-feeder bivalve mollusk Unio pictorum from Rybinsk Reservoir (Volga River, Russia) were exposed in mesocosms to influencing factors, and then reproductive disorders, heart rate and heat tolerance in animals were estimated.
