Establishing a Demographic Health Surveillance System in Tsakare Community, Mt. Darwin District, Zimbabwe, 2024 Baseline Study - Dataset
Description
This dataset presents baseline findings from the Tsakare Community Health Survey conducted to inform the establishment of a Demographic Health Surveillance System (DHSS). It includes data from 401 randomly selected women knowledgeable about household health issues, collected using structured questionnaires via Open Data Kit (ODK). The dataset covers sociodemographic characteristics, maternal and child health, knowledge and prevention of hypertension, diabetes, and HIV, and patterns of health service utilization. All data are anonymized and suitable for use in community health research and program evaluation.

Steps to reproduce
To reproduce the same type of data, another team would need to implement a similar descriptive cross-sectional household survey in the Tsakare Community (or a comparable setting), again targeting women who are knowledgeable about household health issues, selected using random sampling from an up-to-date sampling frame. Using the same or an adapted version of the original structured questionnaire, they would collect data electronically (for example with Open Data Kit or a similar platform) after obtaining ethical approval and informed consent, ensuring that core domains are retained: sociodemographic characteristics, maternal and child sexual and reproductive health, knowledge and prevention practices for hypertension and diabetes, and awareness of HIV transmission and prevention. By applying comparable inclusion criteria, sampling procedures, questionnaire items, and fieldwork protocols—including interviewer training, data quality checks, and anonymization procedures—the resulting dataset would be methodologically consistent with the original baseline and suitable for pooled analysis or trend comparisons over time.
