Crack simulation
Description
The purpose of this paper is to present the strain energy release rate (SERR) and stress intensity factor (SIF) for different crack configurations subjected to mechanical and thermomechanical loading using the FE model. The influence of crack length and position for edge and internal cracks positioned horizontally to calculate SERR and SIF are discussed. The numerical results show that the SERR and SIF of edge crack are large compared to internal crack irrespective of crack length, position and loading. During both loading conditions, the edge cracks present near the top surface and at the TC/BC interface results in the high value of SERR and SIF compared to the crack positioned in the ceramic. The bi-material properties influence the crack positioned at the TC/BC interface. The crack shape pattern at the end of the thermomechanical cycle is similar to the mechanical loading except the dimensional shift in the crack tip.
