Description

Starting in the 20th century, cities in the Amazon assumed a strategic role as logistical bases for the occupation and development of the territory, serving as support for the expansion of pioneer frontiers that find their physical expression in the forested landscape. Following a previously defined theoretical-methodological approach (Ribeiro et al., 2024), the urban weft (Ribeiro, 2024) is used as a reference to represent the extensive and often overlooked Amazonian urban network and to identify how industrial-capitalist urbanization has been altering relationships with nature. This database contributes to broadening the analysis of the environmental dimension of the urban weft, incorporating, beyond the presence and percentage of primary forests and rivers, an understanding of the dynamics of deforestation in the Amazonian urban weft. To identify patterns and highlight regions that are more or less exposed and under pressure, the deforestation data from PRODES (INPE, 2024) serves as a baseline for constructing variables that help interpret both historical and recent processes of forest conversion in the Amazonian urban weft (Ribeiro et al., 2024). Additionally, the land use and land cover mapping from the TerraClass project (Almeida et al., 2014) contributes to the analysis of forest regeneration, identifying regions with potential for forest recovery as a symbolic element with productive potential. The analysis is conducted using the state of Pará as the study area and generates three indicators as outputs: (i) PFLO - Forest Loss, highlighting cells with over 50% forest loss associated with deforestation processes from 1988 to 2023; (ii) PRFLO - Recent Forest Loss, highlighting cells with over 50% forest loss associated with deforestation processes since 2008; and (iii) Forest Regeneration, highlighting cells with over 50% secondary vegetation mapped in 2020.
