Mangroves and Wetlands of Bacalar, Quintana Roo, Mexico, dataset
Description
Data obtained from "Participatory sampling for the inventory and diagnosis of Mangrove ecosystems of Bacalar Lagoon"; carried out between April and May 2021. Field work in 79 sites along the shoreline of Bacalar Lagoon, Quintana Roo, to characterize the riverine vegetation. Vegetation data (species richness, height, canopy size, apparent density, and condition), soil samples were taken with an AMS Gouge Augers nucleator, and salinity and interstitial water temperature were recorded. Through remote sensing supported by field data, the map "Mangroves and Wetlands of Bacalar, Quintana Roo, Mexico" was constructed and were identified: 1) Water body; 2) Floodplains; 3) Mangrove with hydrophilic grassland; 4) Fringe mangrove; 5) Peten Mangrove / Medium statured tropical forest; 6) Medium statured tropical forest; 7) Gallery vegetation with Mangrove; and 8) Modified.

Steps to reproduce
Our data are the first characterization of wetlands for Bacalar lagoon, hoping that it will be the baseline for spatial and temporal monitoring of this important ecosystem. The data result from joint work between organized civil society, stakeholders, and academy, to characterize the wetlands for Bacalar lagoon, to have updated information, for direct use by society, stakeholders, and researchers interested in to contribute to sustainable management and conservation of the area, and their important ecosystems and environmental services.
