Ancient Indian literature has a lot of unfold knowledge in the field of Science, Literature, Medicine, Astronomy, Psychology, etc., which were in the forms of poems, stories, Vachanas, and other literary forms. The materials used to write these scripts are paper, palm leafs, stones, rocks and temple walls, etc In the literature, the digitization and restoration of historical Kannada handwritten manuscripts written on paper is already addressed. Whereas, very little work of the digitization & restoration of historical Kannada handwritten manuscripts written on palm leafs has been noticed. Further, the digitization of Palm leaf manuscripts is very much essential as they are very fragile and susceptible to damage caused by insects, climatic conditions, ink bleeding, lack of attention and unscientific storage. Hence, it is necessary for these manuscripts to capture and store them in the digital form. Inscriptions are the main source for reconstructing the history and culture of an ancient civilization. The script of the modern Indian language evolves over centuries and finally transformed into the present form. Modern readers find difficulty in interpreting scripts of the olden days. The characters in a script have changed over time. Hence, for reading ancient scripts the period has to determine so as to have knowledge of which character set of ancient days is to be employed for automatic reading. Prediction of the era of a given ancient document is a follow-on aspect of an ancient script recognition system and can be used in an OCR system for ancient scripts. This knowledge can be used by archaeologists and historians for further exploration. Epigraphy is the science of identifying the inscriptions on rock, pillars, temple walls, copper plates, palm leaves and other writing materials employed in ancient times. It is a primary tool of archaeology when dealing with literature cultures. Paleography is the study of ancient handwriting and the practice of deciphering and reading historical manuscripts.
