DATE-Q translation and cross-cultural adaptation dataset
Description
The research that this data shows aimed to translate and cross-culturally adapt into Brazilian Portuguese, and to validate the DiAbeTes Education Questionnaire (DATE-Q), a self-administered tool developed to evaluate disease-related knowledge, for its use in Brazil. The dataset published here describes the process of translation and cross-cultural adaptation what comprised of five steps as follows: (1) Translation into Portuguese - two translations from English into Portuguese were generated independently by two native speakers translators (T1 and T2) of Brazilian Portuguese; (2) Synthesis of the translations – T1, T2 and a physiotherapist summarized the two translations in one translated version (T1.2), this process was reported, and disagreements were solved by consensus; (3) Back translation - two translators not familiar with the original version of the questionnaire and native speakers of English (BT1 and BT2) translated the T1.2 version back into English; (4) Expert committee: a committee of experts was formed by T1, BT1, a physiotherapist, a dietitian, a physician expert in diabetes and an associate professor with expertise in methodology to consolidate all previous versions of the questionnaire and to develop a pre-final version of the questionnaire in Brazilian Portuguese to be used in a pilot test; (5) Pilot test of pre-final version – thirty diabetes individuals responded in a self-administered way the pre-final version of the questionnaire, and their comprehension and answer of each item were assessed. After completing the fifth step, the last adaptations were made to obtain the version to be psychometrically tested in the next phase of this study. There was no divergence between the translated and back-translated versions compared to the original questionnaire, and the committee of experts identified equivalence between then. Cross-cultural adaptations were performed based on expert committee recommendations and pilot test results resulting in ten items culturally adapted.
