Mechanical Neck Pain: A comparison of Yoga and Physiotherapy on Pain & Disability and Pressure Pain Threshold
Description
120 patients with subacute bilateral mechanical neck pain were selected according to the inclusion criteria. Patients was randomized to the 4 groups: PNF Group, Yoga group, combined group and control group. 120 sample of bilateral sub-acute mechanical neck pain cases were selected with criteria based consecutive randomization. Sample size was calculated using Cochran’s formula with 95% confidence level (alpha=0.05). This study was registered with Clinical Trial Registry of India (CTRI) with registration number CTRI/2019/01/016985. The study was approved by Institutional Ethics Committee (IEC) of Amity University Uttar Pradesh, Noida. The inclusion criteria for this study were patients with bilateral subacute mechanical neck pain duration (6 weeks-12 weeks), aged 18-30 years, Neck Disability Index (NDI)<40%, both males and females, and subjects those who have dull aching pain increased by sustained neck postures (10). The exclusion criteria included subjects with diagnosed spinal deformities, cervical spondylitis with radiculopathy, neoplasm or inflammatory disease of neck, history of cervical osteoporosis, fracture, whiplash injury, low back pain, cervicogenic headache, or cervical surgery. Outcome measures with the parameters used were Neck Pain and Disability, Pressure Pain Thresholds (PPT). The results indicates that neck pain and disability, pressure pain threshold for rhomboids and sternocleidomastoid improves significantly within groups for all the four groups comparing from baseline to 4-week post intervention and baseline to last follow up and 4-week intervention to last post intervention 2 week follow up (p<0.05). Between group analysis showed that group 3 (combined Ardhmatsyendrasana with PNF and OM chanting) showed significant improvement (p<0.05) in neck pain and its related disability, pressure pain threshold for cervical muscles for patients suffering from bilateral subacute mechanical neck pain even two weeks after the treatment ceases.
