The diet of Hylaeamys seuanezi (Weksler, Geise & Cerqueira, 1999) (Rodentia: Cricetidae) in forest formations: a comparison of methods and habitats

Steps to reproduce

We characterized the diet of the H. seuanezi species through the analysis of 203 samples, those being: 47 samples of feces and 19 of stomachs coming from 51 individuals captured in agroforests, and 73 samples of feces and 64 of stomachs coming from 75 individuals captured in forest remnants. The samples collected were stored in Eppendorf tubes and fixed with 70% alcohol. In the lab the material was diluted in water (pre-boil). The content was colored in blue from Astra and Safranin, both at 1%. The colored material was initially separated in two categories: (1) vegetable and (2) animal, and later on in 17 subcategories. For vegetable matter, the subcategories utilized were: vegetative part (e.g.: fiber, leaf, bark), fruit (e.g.: fruit pulp, stem, fruit peel), intact seed (with no visible damage), and damaged seed (fragmented or with visible fissures). The exoskeletons and matter of animal origin were identified in the smallest taxonomic level possible (usualy Order).
