This dataset was identified through following the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-analysis (PRISMA) (Page et al., 2021) as a guideline to collect publication data. Following the updated procedure of PRISMA, three stages were followed, namely, identification, screening, and included. The collection of publications following the PRISMA procedure (Page et al., 2021) . At the identification phase, Scopus database was the electronic database for this research since Scopus is regarded as the most comprehensive dataset for social studies. “connectivism” is the only word in Title-Abstract-Keywords Boolean Query in the search function of Scopus to include as many documents as possible. Only documents 2004 onwards were included because connectivism is a new concept first proposed in 2004. And only “journal articles” under “document type” were included, as journal articles directly reflect scenarios related to the research in connectivism. Only articles published in English were included. At the screening stage, titles, keywords, and abstracts of the 257 documents were reviewed manually. 65 documents unrelated to connectivism learning theory were excluded. 192 documents were left for full-text retrieval. 6 were not retrieved. The full texts of the rest 186 documents were reviewed manually to further remove documents loosely connected to research on connectivism. 9 documents where connectivism was mentioned but not studied, 6 documents where connectivism was discussed as unimportant background information, 5 reflection papers on subjective experiences, and 5 literature review documents were excluded. 161 articles were left for bibliometric analysis.
