Steps to reproduce

Four month old moisture free jatropha seed sample weight 2.037 gm is used to determine the carbon, hydrogen and nitrogen content and another sample of jatropha seed weight 2.244gm is used to determine the oxygen content. The protein factor was taken as 6.25. The CHNS (O) Analyzer (Thermo finnigan, Italy, model- FLASH EA 1112 series, software Eager 300) is used to determine the percentage of elemental content of seed, which is based on the principal of “Dumas method” at Sophisticated Instrument Laboratory, IIT Bombay. This process involves the complete and instantaneous oxidation of the seed sample by “flash combustion”. The combustion products are further separated by a chromatographic column in the form of NO2, CO2, SO2, and H2O and then detected by the thermal conductivity detector (T.C.D.), which gives an output signal proportional to the concentration of the carbon, nitrogen, hydrogen, sulphur and oxygen components of the mixture. This instrument is calibrated with the analysis of standard compound using the K-factors calculations.
