Description

We hypothesized that fish biomass could act as a source or sink of P, sometimes related to food N:P stoichiometry and many times not. Elemental proportions may not fully explain homeostasis in consumers. Rather the right proportion of certain organic molecules but not all molecules (containing the very same elements) do. With or without these molecules, homeostasis may show unprecedented plasticity, and DRP losses could either go for primary productivity or remain trapped in consumer. Five experiments investigated the following objectives using semi-purified research diets (SPRD) on the common carp (Cyprinus carpio) model. The objectives were as follows: (a) to investigate differences in P utilization efficiency (PUE) and DRP losses between scaleless and scaly carp fed a P-deficient diet; (b) to investigate graded levels of bioavailable P fed (maintaining iso-nitrogenous and isoenergetic intake) on PUE and DRP losses of scaly carp; (c) to investigate graded levels of digestible lysine and methionine fed (maintaining iso-nitrogenous, iso-phosphorus, and isoenergetic intake) on PUE and DRP losses of scaly carp; (d) to investigate graded levels of digestible non-protein energy (NPE) intake (maintaining iso-nitrogenous, iso-amino acids, and iso-phosphorus intake) on PUE and DRP losses of scaly carp; and (e) to investigate overwintering-like feed deprivation on PUE and DRP losses at basal metabolism. This dataset contains data of pre-trial, experiment 1 to 4 included in the manuscript. Parameters include: Experiment; Group; Replicate; Initial tank biomass; Final tank biomass; Feed digestible N; Feed bioavailable P; Food N: P (mass); Food N: P (molar); Non-faecal P loss; Non-faecal N loss; Non-faecal N:P loss (mass); Non-faecal N:P loss (molar); Body protein content; Body N content; Body P content; Body N:P (mass); Body N:P (molar); PUE; DRP losses. Experimental groups include: For experiment 1 to 3 (control, T1, T2 and T3), For pre-trial (scaly carp and scaleless carp), For experiment-4 (starved).
