Torque Forces on Soft Drinks PET Packaging

This data set contains the torque force values, in N.m, for five different models of soft drinks PET packaging (PET bottles). There are three age groups for both female and male subjects in two attempts of opening with each hand on the cap. The opening attempts were made only in counter-clockwise direction. The models were previously selected among several options by their morphological features and all of them are 2L capacity. A green paint was used inside the packaging, not affecting the friction between the packaging and the hands. To measure the torque forces, a static torque screwdriver/torque transducer (Mecmesin, UK) was coupled inside the packaging. That transducer was then connected to an Advanced Force Gauge (AFG 500, Mecmesin, UK). None of the subjects reported any CTD symptom up to 12 months prior to the activities.


Steps to reproduce

Place the bottles at a 0.85m height shelf. Instruct the subject not to lift up the packaging. A pulp-lateral pinch/prehension pattern should be used on the cap. That involves the side aspect of the index finger (middle phalange) and the pulp (distal phalange) of the thumb. For the packaging body, ask the subjects to hold it in the upper portion, near the cap (shoulder). The subjects should gradually increase the applied force till they reach their maximum strengths, and then maintain it for 3 seconds. A 30s rest was offered between the attempts. Provide two opening attempts (counter-clockwise only) with each hand on the cap, alternately. Randomize the sequence of the bottle models.
