Description

This dataset comprises three Excel files supporting the study of sedimentary reactive nitrogen removal and nitrous oxide production in the western Guangdong–Beibu Gulf continental shelf. The first file, “Supplementary dataset 1,” is a compilation of published sediment nitrogen-removal measurements from continental shelves, lagoons, estuaries, and gulfs worldwide. It contains information on sampling location, geographic coordinates, water depth, bottom-water temperature, denitrification and anammox rates, and the relative contribution of anammox to total N2 production (ra). Where available, the shelf dataset also includes denitrification-derived N2O production and yield; direct denitrification supported by overlying-water nitrate (P14w); coupled nitrification–denitrification supported by sedimentary nitrification (P14n); bottom-water nitrate plus nitrite (NOx-) and ammonium (NH4+) concentrations; sediment total organic carbon (TOC), total nitrogen (TN), and chlorophyll a (Chl a); porewater NOx- and NH4+ concentrations; sediment oxygen consumption rates; and the corresponding literature references. The second file, “Source Data for Main Figures,” contains the numerical data underlying Figs. 1–3 of the main text. These data include sediment–water NOx- and NH4+ fluxes, sediment oxygen consumption rates, potential and in situ denitrification and anammox rates, the relative contribution of anammox to total nitrogen removal, denitrification-derived N2 and N2O production rates, N2O yields, and the contributions of direct denitrification and coupled nitrification–denitrification to total sediment nitrogen removal. It also includes vertical profiles of potential nitrogen-removal rates and N2O production in the sediment. Standard deviations are provided where applicable. The third file, “Source Data for Supplementary Figures,” contains the numerical data underlying Figs. S1, S2, S3, S5, S7, S8, and S9. It includes sampling-station coordinates and water depths; vertical profiles of sediment porosity and Chl a; porewater NOx-, NH4+, CO2, CH4, and N2O concentrations; comparisons between potential and in situ denitrification, anammox, N2O production, and N2O yields; sediment–water NOx- fluxes and direct denitrification rates; environmental variables used to examine controls on N2O production and yield; surface- and bottom-water N2O concentrations; and water-column temperature and salinity profiles. Standard deviations are provided where applicable, and blank cells indicate unavailable or missing data.
