Description

The study investigated teachers’ teaching strategies with the aim of identifying frequencies and patterns in teachers’ use of strategies for developing students’ text comprehension. A total of one hundred and eighty-six (186) teachers from 35 primary schools from Estonia were questioned. The questionnaire consisted of 18 items describing different teaching activities. The result of the findings revealed three strategies: supporting active learning, teaching text comprehension and teaching grammar rules. First school stage (Grades 1 to 3) teachers preferred to use the strategy of supporting active learning, while second school stage (Grades 4 to 6) teachers favoured teaching grammar rules. Teachers’ subgroups with different profiles were also revealed. In the largest subgroup, teachers taught from Grades 1 to 3 and preferred supporting active learning.
