DNCC WM dataset: Dhaka North City Corporation Waste Management Dataset
Description
This dataset contains raw data, necessary correction, and author's calculations on the data from the Dhaka North City Corporation's waste management department and its private contractors. The purpose of data collection, was to test whether the local governments' administrative units (called 'wards') with privatized (contracted-out) waste collection service, collected significantly more waste than wards which were not privatized. All data is ward-wise, unless otherwise stated. Available data was collected on variables which may influence waste collection. Waste collection in this dataset refers to "secondary waste", which is the waste that is delivered from Secondary Transfer Stations (STS) to the landfill. The dataset contains monthly data on collected waste (in ton), number of trips, and number of workers, for the period 2017 January to 2019 December. 2020 data was avoided for likely disruption in typical average figures due to COVID-19. Monthly waste collection data prior to 2017 was unavailable. The monthly data on collected waste and number of trips, is the weigh-bridge data obtained with permission of the City Corporation waste management department. Monthly workers data, number of vehicles by type and capacity, and allotted fuel and trips, for the above period was also obtained from the City Corporation's waste management department and private contractors. Formal application requests were submitted as required. In addition to monthly data, annual data is included for collected waste, population estimates, population density, and per capita per day waste collection. These were obtained from the City Corporation's annual waste reports. The annual figures are for financial years, spanning 3 financial years from 2016-17 to 2018-19. Number of STS is also included, which was obtained from the City Corporation. The City Corporation had a list of all the STS for the period with their corresponding dates of establishment, and this was used to show the month-wise distribution of completed STS in the dataset. The data is associated with a research article. The data columns for the author's correction and calculations on the raw data are present in the dataset, and can be updated in future as needed. All data has also been normalized using the Min-Max normalization formula. Calculated percentages (per capita) have also been normalized in the same way. Findings are discussed in the associated research article.

The raw data for the monthly waste net weight and number of monthly trips may be obtained from the landfill weigh-bridge computer, by making formal application request to the Dhaka North City Corporation's (DNCC) Waste Management Department (WMD). Data on monthly number of sweepers may be obtained by making formal application request through the Right to Information form, addressed to the Public Relations (PR) department chief. The PR department will forward it to the appropriate WMD personnel at the head office, who will forward it to each of the zonal offices as necessary. Data collected or compiled by the head office's WMD, will be handed to the researchers only after all requested information has arrived. The variables and formulae for all calculated variables, have been provided in metadata files. The method used for analysis was within-between random-effects model (also called hybrid model) using Stata, and the relevant codes are shared both here and in a data article that complements the research article.
