Description

This dataset contains the structured evidence base and reproducibility materials underlying the systematic review “OJIP chlorophyll fluorescence responses to drought, heat and combined drought–heat stress: a systematic review and quantitative evidence synthesis”. The review assembled a harmonised corpus of 868 unique publications identified from Scopus and PubMed/MEDLINE. Of these, 449 publications were retained as review-relevant evidence, including 114 final full-text core studies and 331 supporting publications. The repository includes database-search documentation, a publication-level screening and harmonisation audit, operational coding rules, the final 114-study full-text core evidence matrix, a dedicated combined drought–heat design and interaction audit, publication-level quantitative evidence-density summaries, and provenance, quality-control and reproducibility documentation. The data capture study design, stress type and severity, OJIP/JIP variables, full-transient and phase-specific responses, reaction-centre behaviour, donor-side/OEC-associated evidence, post-QA/acceptor-side responses, intersystem and PSI-associated evidence, recovery and acclimation, genotype/species variation, phenotyping relevance and supporting physiological measurements. The evidence framework distinguishes diagnostic sensitivity from mechanistic specificity. Fluorescence-derived localisation is therefore kept separate from independently corroborated or directly measured processes, and null, contradictory, uncertain and source-limited evidence is retained explicitly. Combined drought–heat studies are additionally classified according to experimental architecture, with four-state treatment design, pairwise treatment differences, formal drought × heat interaction and biological synergy treated as distinct evidentiary levels. Publication-level counts and proportions in the dataset describe the breadth, distribution and maturity of the evidence base and should not be interpreted as pooled biological effect sizes. Steps to reproduce

Consult 01_Search_Strategies_S1.xlsx for the database-specific search strategies, search dates, fields and search returns used to identify the literature. Use 02_Record_Level_Screening_Audit_S2.xlsx to inspect the harmonised 868-publication corpus, database provenance, duplicate reconciliation, screening disposition and exclusion/uncertainty decisions. Apply the operational definitions and decision rules in 03_Coding_Rules_and_Codebook_S3.docx when interpreting stress categories, OJIP/JIP variables, mechanistic evidence, recovery, phenotyping, uncertainty and source-quality fields. Use 04_Final_114_Core_Evidence_Matrix_S4.xlsx as the final full-text core evidence set used for manuscript-level mechanistic synthesis. Each publication is linked by a permanent Record_ID. For combined drought–heat analyses, use 05_Combined_Drought_Heat_Audit_S5.xlsx to distinguish treatment architecture, pairwise treatment differences, formal drought × heat interaction and synergy/non-additivity claims. Use 06_Quantitative_Evidence_Density_S6.xlsx to reproduce the publication-level counts and proportions reported as measures of evidence breadth and maturity. These values should not be interpreted as pooled biological effect sizes. Consult 07_Provenance_QC_Reproducibility_S7.docx for deduplication, harmonisation, source verification, classification changes, quality-control rules and the transition from the provisional 118-paper core to the final 114-paper full-text core. Retain NR, UNCLEAR, source limitations, null findings and contradictory evidence as coded; do not replace missing information by inference. The Record_ID field should be used to trace publications across all repository files. The repository reproduces the structured review database, classification logic, evidence matrices and audit trail. It does not redistribute copyrighted article full texts or licensed raw database exports.
