Farmer Cooperatives in China, 2000–2022: Registration Records from the National Industrial and Commercial Database

This dataset contains registration records of 2.71 million farmer professional cooperatives in China registered between 2000 and 2022. The data were extracted from the China Industrial and Commercial Enterprise Registration Database (National Enterprise Credit Information Publicity System). Each observation represents one registered cooperative entity, with information on provincial location, organizational form, establishment and deregistration dates, operational status, survival time, industry classification, and registered capital. The dataset provides a comprehensive foundation for analyzing the temporal trends, regional distribution, industrial specialization, capital structure, and survival dynamics of the cooperative sector in China. This open-access resource supports replication studies, cross-regional and cross-industry comparative analyses, and evidence-based policy evaluations in agricultural economics and rural development.

Steps to reproduce

The data were extracted from the China Industrial and Commercial Enterprise Registration Database. A four-step screening protocol was applied to identify farmer cooperatives: (1) industry sector filtering based on the Industrial Classification for National Economic Activities (GB/T 4754-2017); (2) organizational type screening to retain entities registered as “Farmer Professional Cooperative”, “Branch of Farmer Professional Cooperative”, or “Farmer Professional Cooperative Economic Organization”; (3) name validation to retain entities containing the keyword “professional cooperative” in their registered names; and (4) business scope verification to ensure core activities include agricultural production, processing, or related services. Data cleaning and variable construction were performed using Stata 18.0. The codebook (Codebook_farmer_cooperatives.pdf) provides detailed variable definitions and coding schemes.
