- Data for: A performance-based planning approach integrating supply and demand of urban ecosystem servicesThe dataset contains the maps of the case study described in the paper "A performance-based planning approach integrating supply and demand of urban ecosystem services", published in Landscape and Urban Planning. The maps describe the supply and demand of urban ecosystem services in the city of Trento (Italy) and show how ecosystem service assessments can support the implementation of an innovative performance-based planning approach. The dataset includes seven maps of ecosystem service supply (air purification, food supply, habitat provision, microclimate regulation, noise mitigation, recreation, runoff mitigation), five maps of ecosystem services demand (food supply, microclimate regulation, noise mitigation, recreation, runoff mitigation), and two synthesis maps. The synthesis maps serve as operational tools to implement the performance-based planning approach proposed and tested in the paper. The "combined ES supply map" provides an overall assessment of the expected negative impacts of urban transformations on ecosystem services, while the "integrated ES demand map" identifies the priority ecosystem services to enhance in different areas of the city. Values of the indicators in the supply and demand maps and in the "combined ES supply map" range from 0 to 1. The "integrated ES demand map" is a categorical map with classes indicated by integer values from 1 to 6. For a description of the classes, please refer to the original paper. All maps are provided in Geotiff format, 20-m resolution, projected coordinate system EPSG:3044, except for the map of habitat provision. They cover the whole administrative territory of Trento.

- Data for: Trees, grass or concrete? Influence of different types of environments on stress reductionDespite studies on how natural environments affect human health and well-being, few have focused on how various types of vegetation affect people’s physiological and psychological well-being. To identify the restorative effects of different types of vegetation (i.e., trees and grass) in virtual environments on individuals, we designed and conducted a randomized controlled experiment with 90 university students. After participants took a math test amid noise for 5 min to induce stress, we randomly assigned each to one of three virtual reality environments (i.e., grass, trees, and concrete/gray) that we designed and in which they were immersed for 10 min. We measured skin conductance level throughout the test and immersion as well as positive and negative affect before the test, before immersion, and after immersion. Results of repeated measures analysis of variance with a general linear model comparing the restorative effects of the environmental treatments indicated that the grass environment improved positive affect better than the trees and gray environments. We also found that environments with natural elements had a stronger restorative effect than the gray environment, which confirms theory contending that unlearned factors of evolutionary origin influence affective responses to environments. Our findings provide valuable evidence that can guide the practical landscape planning and design of restorative environments for the public.
