  • Data for: Why is inequality higher among the old? Evidence from China
We use panel data from the China Health and Nutrition Survey (CHNS) for the period 1991-2015. The CHNS is a collaborative project between the Carolina Population Center at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and the National Institute for Nutrition and Health at the Chinese Center for Disease Control and Prevention. CHNS data are available from ten waves (1989, 1991, 1993, 1997, 2000, 2004, 2006, 2009, 2011, and 2015), in which surveyed households were revisited and new households were added to replace households no longer participating in the study. We exclude the first survey year 1989 from our sample because the questions asked in the 1989 survey are different from those in other waves, and it is therefore difficult to compare the 1989 data with other waves (see also, Zhong 2011; Baeten, Ourti, and Doorslaer 2013; Cao and Birchenall 2013). The CHNS uses a multistage, random cluster-sampling scheme to select the households from each sampled province. Counties in each province were selected using a weighted method. Villages and townships in each county and urban and suburban neighborhoods in each city were randomly selected. The survey collects detailed information on income, assets, and demographics for each household.

  • Data for: Direct or indirect? The impact of political connections on export mode of Chinese private enterprises
Our firm-level data is taken from the Biennial National Survey of Chinese Private Enterprises. The survey was jointly organized and conducted by the United Front Work Department of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of China, the All-China Federation of Industry and Commerce, the State Administration of Industry and Commerce, and the Private Economy Research Institute of China. We work with three waves of survey data conducted in 2004, 2006, and 2008 due to information availability on export modes. The survey collects information from the previous year, so the firm information in our data corresponds to 2003, 2005, and 2007. The data is repeated cross-sectional in nature as firms are re-sampled nationally for each survey.

  • Replication Data for: Is the price elasticity of demand for coal in China increasing
China's residential sector has experienced rapid electrification and gasification. Among rural households, however, coal still accounts for a large share of energy use, especially in the north. Use of coal for cooking and heating brings large health and pollution risks. From a theoretical viewpoint, economic tools such as taxes and subsidies have the potential to play a crucial role in addressing this issue. In this paper, a provincial-level dataset is used to estimate the price and income elasticities of aggregate coal demand by rural households. We find that coal is a non-Giffen inferior good for the rural household sector. This means that future income growth may help to induce switching from coal. Demand is becoming more price elastic as rural incomes grow. We also find that rural residential coal demand is more price- and income-responsive in the south than the north, perhaps because of fewer substitution options in the north. Our results provide benchmarks and parameters for policy simulation research. Provincial panel data for 1998–2012. Variables: Ln Coal consumption Ln Real coal price index Ln Real coal price level Ln GDP Secondary share of economy (%) State-owned share of total revenue from industrial enterprises (%) Five-year energy conservation assignments to industry (%) Post-2005 retired thermal power capacity (%) Ln Real gasoline price
