Description

This dataset provides the fully detailed quarterly breakdown of Ukraine's Financial Account, per the IMF's Balance of Payments and International Investment Position Manual (BPM6), covering 2015Q1 through 2026Q1 (45 quarters). It covers direct investment, portfolio investment, financial derivatives, and other investment (loans, currency and deposits, trade credits, other accounts), broken down by institutional sector (general government, central bank/NBU, deposit-taking banks, other financial corporations, non-financial corporations/households/NPISH), by asset/liability side, and by maturity (short-/long-term) where published. It also includes reserve asset transactions (monetary gold, SDR, reserve position), errors and omissions, and the overall balance. The dataset supports research on capital flow volatility, sectoral financing patterns, and country/banking-sector risk during the war. It is a genuine complement -- not a duplicate -- of the author's companion "Gross External Debt Panel" dataset in this series: this dataset captures quarterly net CAPITAL FLOWS (new borrowing/lending, repayments, valuation-neutral transactions) per BPM6, while the Gross External Debt Panel captures annual END-OF-YEAR STOCKS (outstanding balances) per the same underlying institutional sector classification. The two together allow a flow-stock reconciliation (e.g. checking how much of a year's change in the debt stock is explained by BOP-recorded net flows versus valuation/exchange-rate effects). METHODOLOGY & SOURCES Figures are taken directly from the National Bank of Ukraine's official Balance of Payments publication (standard presentation, detailed table) and are not estimated or interpolated. As in the companion Current & Capital Account dataset, most line items are published as a net value optionally followed by separate "Кредит" and "Дебет" component rows; these have been reshaped into net_uah_mln, credit_uah_mln and debit_uah_mln, with the original nesting preserved in indent_level and item_path. IMPORTANT: this dataset contains quarterly FLOWS, not stock/level data. Sign convention follows BPM6 financial-account practice (net acquisition of assets minus net incurrence of liabilities); a positive Financial Account balance corresponds to net lending to the rest of the world.
