Description

This dataset contains the data, Stata code and output that reproduce every result in the article "Energy Transition Rather Than Income Growth: Renewable Energy and the Fragility of Environmental Kuznets Turning Points in South Asia" by K.M. Arshad (University of Dhaka). The panel is balanced and covers Bangladesh, India, Nepal, Pakistan and Sri Lanka from 1990 to 2021 (160 country-year observations). The dependent variable is the ecological footprint of consumption per capita from the National Footprint and Biocapacity Accounts, 2026 edition, together with its six published components (built-up land, carbon, cropland, fishing grounds, forest products and grazing land). The explanatory variables come from the World Bank's World Development Indicators: GDP per capita (PPP, constant 2021 international dollars), mobile cellular subscriptions per 100 people, trade openness, renewable energy consumption as a share of final energy consumption and domestic credit to the private sector. Renewable electricity output as a share of total electricity output is included for a robustness check. Seven Sri Lankan values (trade openness 2010–2014 and domestic credit 2020–2021) are missing from the World Development Indicators and were taken from Central Bank of Sri Lanka annual reports; README.txt and the Notes sheet of the spreadsheet give the sources and derivations. The World Bank publishes no renewable electricity value for Nepal in nine years; those cells are left empty. Nothing is imputed.

Files

Steps to reproduce

1. Download all four files into one folder. 2. Open EKC_South_Asia_replication_v2.do in Stata 14.1 or later. If Stata does not start in that folder, type cd "path/to/the/folder" in the Command window. 3. Run the whole do-file (Ctrl+D). On the first run it installs the user-written packages xtcd, pescadf, xtmg, xtscc, xtgcause, xthst and xtwest, so an internet connection is needed. It writes EKC_full_analysis_v2.log in the same folder. The run takes about six minutes. 4. Compare the new log with EKC_full_analysis_v2.log, the output of the author's own run. README.txt lists which section of the do-file produces each table of the article and its supplementary material.
