Description

This dataset contains the complete NVivo qualitative codebook developed for the research titled “Operationalizing Circular Economy in the Textile Sector of Developing Countries: A Case Study of Sri Lanka’s Textile Industry.” The codebook was derived through a hybrid thematic analysis combining deductive themes from circular economy literature and inductive themes emerging from 18 expert interviews across Sri Lanka’s textile value chain, public sector, and academia. The dataset includes the following fields: Code/Node name: Thematic labels representing barriers, enablers, strategic implementations, and CE strategies. Description: A concise explanation of each theme’s meaning and scope. Files coded / References: Number of interviews or data extracts associated with the theme. Category: Classification under the main framework variables (Enablers, Barriers, Strategic Implementation, CE Strategies, Contextual Readiness). This codebook serves as a transparent analytical framework for replicating or extending qualitative studies on circular economy implementation in developing-country textile sectors. No personal or identifying information from interview participants is included.

Steps to reproduce

The dataset was developed as part of a qualitative exploratory study titled “Operationalizing Circular Economy in the Textile Sector of Developing Countries: A Case Study of Sri Lanka’s Textile Industry.” Data were collected through 18 expert interviews representing multiple stakeholder groups in the textile value chain, including apparel manufacturers, exporters, sustainability consultants, government institutions, and academia. Participants were selected via purposive and snowball sampling, ensuring diversity of institutional perspectives and practical experience in circular economy (CE) implementation. Each interview followed a semi-structured protocol exploring four predefined thematic areas—enablers, barriers, strategic implementations, and CE strategies—identified from a prior deductive literature synthesis of 30 peer-reviewed articles and 8 international CE policy reports. Interviews were recorded, transcribed verbatim, and analyzed using NVivo software (Release 15.1.2, QSR International, 2024). The NVivo codebook was generated through a hybrid thematic analysis workflow: Deductive phase: initial nodes derived from global CE frameworks and prior research. Inductive phase: new nodes created from emergent themes within Sri Lankan interview transcripts. Coding and refinement: iterative coding cycles with category merging and hierarchical node structuring. Validation: cross-checking of coded themes against the conceptual framework to ensure consistency and traceability. The final codebook contains hierarchical parent and child nodes under five categories—Enablers, Barriers, Strategic Implementations, CE Strategies, and Contextual Readiness. Each node includes a definition, scope note, and reference count. All personal identifiers were removed prior to exporting the codebook. The resulting dataset is fully anonymized and non-sensitive, suitable for reuse or comparative qualitative analysis.
