The microbial flora in feces revealed that the yeast culture extract of grape seed meal attenuates ETEC K88-induced inflammation in BALB/c mice

Background: Enterotoxigenic Escherichia coli (ETEC) is the primary pathogen causing intestinal diseases. ETEC causes diarrhea in more than 10 million people every year and can cause serious symptoms and even lead to death in young children. Methods: 16S rRNA sequencing of feces from the ETEC K88-challenged BALB/c mouse model, prophylactically treated with the yeast culture extract of grape seed meal, was employed to reveal the microbial changes in feces associated with the attenuation of ETEC K88 challenge by the yeast culture extract of grape seed meal. Results: We found that the yeast culture extract of grape seed meal primarily altered the abundance of the butyrate-producing bacterium Odoribacter in the feces of BALB/c mice. Conclusion: The bacterium Odoribacter is a potential probiotic alleviating the inflammatory injury caused by ETEC K88 challenge in BALB/c mice.
