Description

This dataset supports a mixed-methods study assessing the housing needs of Native American households living off reservation in three Northern Arizona border towns: Flagstaff, Page, and Winslow, AZ. The research was sponsored by the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development. Data collection combined an online survey with qualitative focus groups, one-on-one interviews, and video testimonials across the three sites. The dataset includes: - Copy of Rough Draft of Cleaned Data.xlsx: the cleaned survey dataset (Qualtrics export) with quality-control flags and coded housing-challenge themes. - Transcript 1.xlsx: a focus group transcript in spreadsheet format. - Online survey.docx: the blank survey instrument administered to respondents. - FGD1, FGD4, FGD5, FGD6, FGD7 Transcript files: focus group discussion transcripts from the three study sites. - Page #1 and Page #2 Transcript files: individual/small-group interview transcripts from the Page, AZ site. - Transcript 2 and Transcript 3: additional individual interview transcripts. - Video #1 Part 1 and Video #2 Transcription: transcriptions of recorded participant testimonials. All files have been de-identified prior to deposit. Direct identifiers (participant, interviewer, and third-party names; IP addresses; geolocation coordinates; email addresses) were removed or replaced with consistent role-based codes (e.g., "Participant A," "Interviewer 1"). Free-text responses containing unusually specific or sensitive personal narratives were generalized to reduce re-identification risk while preserving the coded themes used in the published analysis. One recorded interview was withheld from this deposit in full due to residual re-identification risk from the density of identifying detail in a single-participant session. Site names (Flagstaff, Page, Winslow) are retained, as they are the geographic unit of analysis, not personal identifiers.

Quantitative data: An online survey was administered via Qualtrics to Native American households living off reservation in Flagstaff, Page, and Winslow, AZ. Responses were cleaned and flagged for completeness and response duration; incomplete or unusually short-duration responses were excluded per the threshold described in the published manuscript(s). Housing-challenge free-text responses were open-coded into the themes recorded in the housing_challenge_themes column. Qualitative data: Semi-structured focus groups and individual interviews were conducted at each of the three sites using a common interview guide covering housing affordability, availability, accessibility, cultural appropriateness, and policy responsiveness. Sessions were audio/video recorded, transcribed verbatim, and thematically coded. Transcripts were subsequently de-identified as described in the dataset description before deposit. Analysis: Survey and qualitative findings were integrated using a convergent mixed-methods design, triangulating descriptive/inferential statistics from the survey with coded themes from the qualitative sessions.
