Description

As highway infrastructure demands for durability and sustainability grow and traffic volumes and axle loads become increasingly high, the traditional flexible pavement design has come to its limits because of fatigue cracking, rutting, and moisture damage that can affect the pavement's durability and performance. Perpetual pavement technology has become a promising solution by offering a structurally long-life pavement system, which only needs periodic surface renewal, but maintains the integrity of the underlying pavement layers. The present study involves an experimental and mechanistic–empirical pavement analysis and design of a bituminous perpetual pavement, which is processed using an Industrial Grade (IG)-modified Dense Bituminous Macadam (DBM) mixture. Research goals are to characterize pavement materials, develop an optimum bituminous mix, evaluate structural suitability for perpetual pavement applications, and evaluate engineering performance.
