Farming Without a Land Market
Description
This data package accompanies Farming Without a Land Market: Cooperatives, Liberalization, and Agricultural Consolidation in Vietnam. It brings together the empirical tables supporting the study and should be understood as both original research data and reference/compiled data. The package includes the authors’ calculations, transformations, compilations, and analytical summaries, alongside information originally produced by other researchers, surveys, government agencies, research programs, and institutional data owners. We recognize the contributions of these original data producers and welcome researchers, institutions, and other owners of the reference data to contact us so they can be appropriately acknowledged and, where applicable, added as contributors to the dataset. The package is designed to make the quantitative evidence underlying the study transparent, accessible, and reusable. It covers agricultural production units, landholding concentration and fragmentation, household characteristics, income and savings, machinery ownership and rental, exposure to shocks, production linkages, technology adoption, crop yields, horticultural demonstrations, plant disease, agroecological conditions, agricultural trade, and institutional responses to an aging agricultural workforce. It also includes a chronology of Vietnamese land and cooperative legislation. Reference sources include the General Statistics Office of Vietnam’s Rural, Agricultural and Fishery Censuses, economic-unit census materials, the Labor Force Survey and Viet Nam Household Living Standards Survey; IPSARD Farm Household and Rice Profitability Surveys; Vietnamese agricultural and horticultural research and demonstration programs; national fruit research materials; academic and policy literature; and Vietnamese and international institutional sources. Source notes identify the origin of reported figures and distinguish them from values calculated by the authors. The package includes derived measures such as percentage changes, ratios, residual shares, implied yields, yield gaps, historical estimates, averages, counts, ranges, and comparative indicators. These calculations are provided alongside reported figures to help users trace the evidence and arithmetic behind the paper. Where sources differ in scope, rounding, or reporting, these limitations are retained rather than concealed. The dataset does not provide respondent-level microdata. Underlying survey and experimental datasets remain with their original custodians and may not be redistributable. Instead, this package provides published or reported summary information and the authors’ derived calculations. We encourage all owners and contributors of the underlying reference data to contact us if they would like their contribution, institutional role, or data ownership to be more explicitly recognized in the contributor information associated with this deposit.
