Description

This dataset supports the research study entitled **“Environmental Noise Levels and Spatial Patterns in Adama Town, Ethiopia: Findings from a Community Noise Survey.”** The dataset contains field measurements of environmental noise collected from four kebeles of Adama Town, Ethiopia: Dhadacha Arara, Degaga, Gurmu, and Geda/Aba Geda. The survey covered five activity/land-use categories in each kebele: **commercial, industrial, residential, religious institutions, and Public Address / Loudspeakers / Communication Towers**. The latter category includes open-space worship, advertisements, community announcements, and amplified public-address activities using loudspeakers/Montarbo systems. Three observations were recorded for each category during both daytime and nighttime periods, producing **120 individual noise observations** from 20 kebele-category sampling locations. The repository includes the original individual observations, calculated site-category means and descriptive statistics, day–night paired summaries, category- and kebele-level summaries, and a screening table comparing applicable measurements with Ethiopian ambient environmental noise guideline values. A codebook and README file are also provided to facilitate interpretation and reuse of the dataset. Approximate reference coordinates for the four kebeles are included for contextual spatial analysis. These coordinates represent approximate kebele reference locations and **not the exact GPS coordinates of the individual sampling points**. The source records report noise measurements in **dB/dBA** and do not separately provide LAeq or Lmax values. Consequently, the derived averages in this repository should not be interpreted as LAeq measurements. Information such as the exact sound-meter model, calibration procedure, microphone height, source distance, precise observation times, weather conditions, and exact sampling-point coordinates was not available in the supplied field records and has not been inferred or fabricated. The dataset is intended to support transparent reporting, descriptive analysis, spatial interpretation, reproducibility, and further research on urban environmental noise in Adama Town and comparable urban settings.
