Síntomas de depresión y apoyo familiar como predictores de la calidad de vida del adulto mayor en Lima-Este, Perú.
Description
ABSTRACT Introduction: Older adults experience emotional changes, with depressive symptoms being common and affecting their overall well-being. In this context, family support is an essential factor in strengthening quality of life and promoting healthy aging. Objective: To determine the extent to which depressive symptoms and family support can predict the quality of life of older adults in East Lima, Peru. Methods: A quantitative, predictive, non-experimental, cross-sectional study was conducted with 500 older adults selected through non-probability convenience sampling. Data collection was carried out through interviews, using the WHOQOL-BREF, the State-Trait Depression Inventory, and the Family Support Scale. The analysis included descriptive statistics, Spearman's rank correlation coefficient, and hierarchical linear regression. Results: Quality of life was moderate, with lower scores in the social dimension. State and trait depression were negatively associated with the quality of life dimensions, while family support showed positive correlations. In the multivariate analysis, trait depression was the main negative predictor and family support the main protective factor for overall quality of life. Discussion: The findings demonstrate that depression and family support are key determinants of quality of life, highlighting the impact of trait depression and the protective role of the family environment. Conclusion: The quality of life of older adults results from the interaction of psychosocial, clinical, and sociodemographic factors, which supports strengthening family support and implementing early detection of depression in primary health care.
