Dataset on Substance Use Initiation and Psychosocial Factors Among Internal Migrant University Students in Bangladesh: An Extended Theory of Planned Behavior Model

This dataset (Version 2) contains primary survey data collected to investigate substance use initiation and its psychosocial determinants among internal migrant university students in Bangladesh. The research framework is grounded in an extended Theory of Planned Behavior (TPB), incorporating key constructs such as knowledge, peer influence, perceived stress, attitude, subjective norms, perceived behavioral control, behavioral intention, and substance use practice/initiation. Compared to Version 1 (N = 373), this updated dataset expands the sample size to N = 500 validated responses collected through a structured questionnaire targeting undergraduate and postgraduate students who relocated from their home districts to pursue higher education in Bangladesh. The dataset includes four primary files: Dataset V2.csv: Cleaned, anonymized response data from 500 respondents across demographics, TPB constructs, and substance use indicators. Questionnaire.pdf: The complete survey instrument utilized for data collection. codebook V2.0.csv: Variable mappings, coding schemes, measurement scales, and descriptions for statistical analysis. README V2.0.md: Technical overview, structure, and usage instructions for reproducing analysis. This dataset provides valuable primary empirical evidence for researchers, public health experts, and policymakers studying university student mental health, internal migration dynamics, and substance use epidemiology in South Asia.

Steps to reproduce

Data Collection and Processing Methodology: Target Population & Eligibility: Data were collected from university students in Bangladesh meeting the following criteria: (a) age 18 or above, (b) currently enrolled in a public or private university, and (c) internal migrants who relocated from their permanent home district for university education. Sampling & Data Expansion: In Version 1, data were gathered from N = 373 participants. Additional field data collection was subsequently conducted using convenience and snowball sampling techniques, expanding the total validated sample size to N = 500 in Version 2. Survey Instrument & Measurement: A structured questionnaire (see Questionnaire.pdf) was administered containing three core sections: Section 1: Screening, demographics, and migration characteristics. Section 2: Psychosocial & Extended TPB Constructs measured on a 5-point Likert Scale (1 = Strongly Disagree to 5 = Strongly Agree). Section 3: Substance use practices and initiation history. Data Cleaning & Validation: Duplicate entries, incomplete submissions, and non-migrant responses were screened out. Variables were coded and standardized into categorical and numerical formats (detailed in codebook V2.0.csv). Data integrity checks were conducted using R/Python prior to generating Dataset V2.csv. Data Analysis: The final dataset (Dataset V2.csv) is structured and ready for structural equation modeling (SEM), logistic regression, factor analysis, or general descriptive and inferential statistical evaluations in SPSS, R, Stata, or Python.
