Who Studies Which Diseases? Uneven infectious disease research across the Americas
Description
This dataset accompanies the manuscript “Who Studies Which Diseases? Uneven infectious disease research across the Americas.” It contains the processed and harmonised data used to examine regional patterns in infectious disease research across Latin America and English-speaking North America between 2015 and 2025. The dataset includes study-level variables describing research aims, host systems, pathogen categories, funding sources, publication language, and geographic region. Data were extracted and classified using a validated LLM-assisted workflow with expert validation and subsequently harmonised for quantitative comparative analyses. Associated analysis scripts are provided to support transparency and reproducibility.

Steps to reproduce
Download Who_Studies_Which_Diseases_public_dataset.csv and the analysis scripts and place them in the same directory. Run the scripts in numerical order: 02_descriptive_analysis.py, 03_regional_comparison.py, 04_chi_square_analysis.py, and 05_logistic_regression.py. The scripts generate a results_pipeline directory containing the descriptive summaries, regional comparisons, chi-square analyses, and logistic regression outputs. The full dataset contains 5,779 publications; regional comparative analyses are restricted to studies classified as Latin America or North America (n = 5,471). Analyses were conducted in Python 3.8 using pandas, NumPy, SciPy, and statsmodels.
