DATASET S1: Composite sections labelled “D05-South”, “D05-Center” and “D05-North” are adopted from Drozdzewski (2005), his appendices “Tafel 2”and “Tafel 3”. One composite profile, labelled “D92”, is adopted from Diessel (1992), his figures 7.35 A-G. DATASET S2: Interpolation of prior age distributions from U-Pb zircon ages to marine horizons and chronostratigraphic boundaries is executed with Bchron (Haslett and Parnell 2008) and presented as percentages of the highest posterior density intervals (HPDI). This interpolation is applied to four composite sections (D05-South, D05-Center, D05-North and D92; Supplementary Data, Dataset S1), resulting in four posterior age estimates for each stratigraphic level. In order to combine these results in a single value, the posterior age estimates are binned at 0.1% density and combined in a single density profile, which is then fitted with a kernel probability density function using the Matlab function “fitdist” (the optimal bandwidth is determined automatically).
