Description

This replication package accompanies the paper "Pitfalls of the Sustainable Development Goals? Transformation of regional development goals and strategic behaviors of local government," submitted to Economic Modelling. It includes all publicly available data, code, and instructions necessary to reproduce the main empirical results reported in the study. The package is intended to promote transparency and to support independent verification of all statistical findings presented in the paper.

Steps to reproduce

Steps to reproduce: (1)step1 Data Cleaning and Preparation.do: Data preparation and merging; builds a panel dataset with control variables. (2) step2 Variable Construction.do: Constructs variables used in the empirical analysis. (3) step3 Figures and Tables.do: Runs the main regressions and produces the regression tables and figures. Output: Tables 3–10, 12–14, A2, A4; Figure 2–3. *Figure 2:GDP and GDP per capita trend comparison 2008–2019 **#Baseline results *Table 3: Baseline regression *Figure 3: Common trend **#Robustness checks *Table 4: Exclusion of non-resource-based regions *Table 5: Exclusion of resource-exhausted regions’ supporting policies *Table 6: Exclusion of the pilot policy of low-carbon cities *Table 7: Overcoming the potential selection bias *Table 8: Overcoming the potential data manipulation problem **#Mechanism *Table 9: Mechanism - industrial development *Table 10: Mechanism - government and firm investments **#Heterogeneity *Table 12: Heterogeneity analysis - different types of resource extraction *Table 13: Heterogeneity analysis - different degrees of resource industry dependence *Table 14: Heterogeneity analysis - different degrees of environmental supervision *Table A2: Summary statistics *Table A4: Falsification of the treated period (4) step4 Excluding the serial correlation problem.do: Excluding the serial correlation problem, used for generating Table A3 of Appendix A. Output: Table A3. **#Robustness checks *Table A3: Excluding the serial correlation problem (5) step5 Falsification test_lnGDP.do and step5 Falsification test_lnPGDP.do: Falsification test, used for generating Figure A1 of Appendix A. Output: Figure A1 Panel A and Panel B. **#Robustness checks *Figure A1: Falsification test (6) Within the main replication folder, we included a master do-file named “readme.do”, which will run all do-files and save the output (figures and tables) to the Results subfolder.
