Description

This raster dataset contains soil moisture, groundwater and terrestrial water storage drought indices for Brazil from February 2003 to March 2024, with a spatial resolution of 0.25°. The Water Storage Deficit Index (WSDI) (Sinha et al., 2017), Soil Moisture Drought Index (SMI) and Groundwater Drought Index (GWI) (Li; Rodell, 2015) are available, calculated, respectively, based on the Profile Soil Moisture, Root Zone Soil Moisture and Groundwater products of the Global Land Data Assimilation System (GLDAS) version 2.2 (Li et al., 2019; Li et al., 2020). The GLDAS 2.2 data were downloaded at daily temporal resolution and transformed into monthly data through averaging, resulting in monthly indices. To obtain the WSDI, SMI and GWI drought indices, the monthly anomalies of the respective variables were initially calculated in relation to a base period ranging from February 2003 to January 2024. The anomaly series were then deseasonalized by subtracting them from their monthly climatology. Finally, the resulting series were normalized based on their mean and standard deviation. Details of the index formulas can be found in Sinha et al. (2017) and Li; Rodell (2015) cited in related links.
