Description

This dataset was collected to assess whether climatic variability affects the timing of wood formation (xylogenesis) or the intra-seasonal dynamics of cell production in trees. It includes weekly microcore observations from Scots pine (Pinus sylvestris) and Norway spruce (Picea abies) in a hemiboreal forest in Estonia during two contrasting years (2018–2019), including a severe drought year. For each sampling date, the number of cells in different developmental phases (cambial zone, enlargement, wall thickening, and mature xylem) was quantified, along with derived variables describing cumulative growth. Associated climate data (temperature, precipitation, relative humidity, and vapor pressure deficit) represent conditions during the 7 days preceding sampling. The data show that phenological timing of wood formation remained stable between years, while cell production rates varied with climatic conditions, indicating that climate primarily influences growth kinetics rather than seasonal timing. The dataset can be used to analyze intra-annual growth dynamics, species-specific responses, and climate–growth relationships.
