Data for: Reciprocal Peer-Tutoring Promotes Preference for Group Work and Flourishing through Student-Created Self-Transcendence Climate: An Intervention Study

Objectives: Achievement Goal Theory research has centered on Mastery and Performance goal structures. This study extends this framework by examining Self-Transcendence (ST) as a distinct goal structure, defined by students’ mutual support to enhance one another’s competence. Specifically, it examined the effects of a Reciprocal Style peer-tutoring intervention in Physical Education (PE) on peer-created ST climate, and whether the latter mediates intervention effects on students' preference for group work and flourishing. Design: Quasi-experimental, with pretest–posttest measurements in intervention and control conditions. Method: Tenth-grade students (N = 316; intervention n = 199, control n = 117) from five Greek schools completed measures of student-created ST, Mastery, and Performance climate in PE, preference for group work, and flourishing before and after a six-class program. In both conditions, students selected to practice two out of six sports. The intervention group participated in Reciprocal Style peer-tutoring; controls were taught with teacher-centered teaching. Results: The intervention had positive effects on peer-created ST and Mastery climate, Preference for Group Work and Flourishing and negative effects on Performance climate. Peer-created ST climate was the primary mediator of the intervention effects on both Preference for Group Work and Flourishing. Conclusion: Findings provide novel quasi-experimental evidence that peer-created ST climate may represent a goal structure distinct from peer-created Mastery climate and might constitute an important pathway through which peer-tutoring interventions promote teamwork and well-being. Results support Reciprocal Teaching as a tool for building student-led supportive learning communities.
