Description

This dataset contains the replication materials for the study titled “Institutional Capacity and the Electricity-System Effects of Digitalisation: Evidence from a Global Panel.” The data support an empirical analysis of how digitalisation affects electricity demand, carbon intensity of electricity generation, and renewable electricity share, and whether these effects are moderated by institutional capacity. The replication package includes the cleaned panel dataset, baseline estimation dataset, and Stata do-file used for data preparation and econometric analysis. The study uses an unbalanced country-year panel covering 182 countries over the period 1998–2023. Key variables include electricity demand per capita, carbon intensity of electricity generation, renewable share of electricity generation, digitalisation indicators, institutional capacity measures, GDP per capita, urbanisation, and industry value added. Digitalisation is measured using a composite index based on internet use, fixed broadband subscriptions, and mobile cellular subscriptions. Institutional capacity is proxied by governance-based indicators, with baseline emphasis on government effectiveness and regulatory quality.
