A double-blind, randomized, placebo-controlled trial of individualized Coccinella septempunctata in the treatment of radiating toothache in adults
Description
This double-blind, randomized, placebo-controlled trial evaluated the efficacy of individualized Coccinella septempunctata in adults with radiating toothache. A total of 105 participants were randomized in a 2:1 ratio to receive either the individualized homeopathic intervention or placebo, alongside supportive care, over a 14-day period. The primary outcome was time to complete pain resolution (VAS = 0), while secondary outcomes included oral health-related quality of life (OHIP-14) and pain intensity (SF-MPQ).The results demonstrated that complete pain resolution occurred in a small proportion of participants (14.8%), with no statistically significant difference between the intervention and placebo groups. Both groups showed comparable improvements in pain and quality-of-life measures over time. Advanced statistical analyses, including Cox regression, linear mixed models, and Bayesian methods, consistently indicated no meaningful treatment effect.Overall, individualized Coccinella septempunctata did not show superiority over placebo in managing radiating toothache. The observed clinical improvements are likely attributable to non-specific factors such as natural recovery, placebo response, and supportive care. Further large-scale, multi-centre trials are recommended to better define its clinical role.
