Description

The main objective of this study is to introduce the Nitrogen Sustainability Index (NSI), a compound-specific framework for assessing nitrogen sustainability across four subsystems (environmental, economic, social, and institutional) and for highlighting priority areas for policy intervention. Using the Entropy Weight Method (EWM) and 24 globally available indicators, we evaluated 135 countries from 2000 to 2022. The NSI's non-compensatory aggregation ensures that deficiencies in one domain are not masked by successes in others, providing a more equitable assessment. This dataset contains all source data, EWM-derived scores, and resulting graphics. To ensure transparency and replicability, the EWM was applied in a detailed, step-by-step manner, with all methodological steps and equations provided in both the dataset and the manuscript.
