A structured set of keywords was constructed to retrieve relevant literature addressing VBL in HSA. The search string incorporated four key conceptual clusters: VBL terminology: “video based learning,” “VBL,” “video* research,” “dialogic video cycle,” “dialog* video*,” “interactive video*,” “digital pedagogy*,” “screen based learning,” “visual instruction,” “video supported learning,” “video driven education,” “video centric pedagogy,” “video aided instruction,” “video based instruction,” “video technology,” “video analysis,” and “video-based teacher professional development,” as well as “Video Research in the Learning Sciences.” Pedagogical and learning science concepts: “learning sciences,” “educational learning,” “pedagogical sciences,” “instructional sciences,” “pedagogical research,” “instructional design,” “teacher learning,” “teacher* training,” “professional development,” “lesson stud*,” “pedagogy,” “dialogic learning,” “dialogic teaching,” “dialog* pedagogy,” “educational dialogue,” “ICAP,” “cognitive engagement,” “active learning,” “knowledge building,” “dialogic inquiry,” “collaborative reasoning,” “thinking together,” “accountable talk,” “academically productive talk,” “relational pedagogy,” “classroom discourse,” “classroom talk,” and “classroom interaction analysis.” Target population: teacher*, to restrict the results to studies involving teachers. Disciplinary focus: “humanities,” “history,” “literacy,” “language arts,” “social sciences,” “civics,” and “civic education.” These four clusters were combined using the Boolean operator AND to ensure that the search retrieved studies addressing all relevant dimensions-VBL, TPD, and HSA disciplines. Boolean logic enables researchers to broaden or narrow search results systematically, depending on how the operators are applied (Booth et al., 2016). The search yielded 839 records across the five databases: ERIC (380), Google Scholar (262), Education Source (104), PsycNET (47), and Web of Science (46). An additional seven sources were added manually through expert consultation and reference list searches, bringing the total number of records to 846.
