Description
As a vital “living skin”, biocrusts play an important role in regulating surface soil evaporation processes due to their effects on soil properties, thereby further modifying the hydrological processes of surface soil in drylands. However, it remains unclear how biocrust layer (usually < 2 cm) impact soil evaporation and the potential resultant effects on the water budget of surface soil. In this study, we investigated evaporation characteristics of aeolian sandy soil (bare soil) and three typical biocrusts, i.e., cyanobacteria crusts (cyano crusts), cyanobacteria and moss mixed crusts (cyano-moss), and moss crusts, on the northern Chinese Loess Plateau. Through laboratory simulated experiments under different evaporation intensities by using infrared lamp irradiation, we obtained the evaporation processes of both biocrust layers (0‒2 cm) and biocrusted soil (0‒15 cm). Additionally, field evaporation experiments were conducted by weighing microlysimeters for ~2 months, while soil water content (θ) and soil temperature (T) at depths of 2, 5, and 10 cm were measured automatically in-situ, respectively. This dataset comprises evaporation data of biological soil crusts (biocrusts) measured on the Loess Plateau by Dr. Li Shenglong and colleagues. It primarily includes basic soil physicochemical properties, daily evaporation, meteorological data, soil moisture, and soil temperature. According to the data: "1. Soil physicochemical properties" refers to the basic physicochemical properties across all treatments; "2. The E of biocrust layer in lab" and "3. The E of biocrusted soil in lab" represent evaporation measurement results from indoor simulated experiments; "4. The E of biocrusted soil in field" indicates field-measured evaporation; "5. Field soil temperature, water content and water storage" characterizes monitoring results obtained through field observations.
