Description

This dataset contains the morphological characterization of Phaseolus vulgaris landraces collected from the Peruvian Amazon and forms part of the study entitled "Population Structure and Diversity of Common Bean (Phaseolus vulgaris L.) Landraces in the Peruvian Amazon." A total of 667 accessions were sown in field trials; however, only 476 accessions successfully completed the evaluation process, while the remaining 191 accessions failed to establish or progress under field conditions. Morphological diversity was assessed using a combination of qualitative and quantitative descriptors to characterize phenotypic variation among the collected germplasm. Substantial phenotypic variability was observed across the evaluated accessions, particularly for traits related to seed color, growth habit, plant architecture, and phenology. This diversity likely reflects both underlying genetic differentiation and the effects of farmer-mediated selection and adaptation to diverse agroecological environments within the Peruvian Amazon. Cluster analysis identified four well-defined morphological groups among the common bean accessions. The groups comprised 78, 97, 250, and 51 accessions in clusters 1, 2, 3, and 4, respectively. The uneven distribution of accessions among clusters indicates a structured pattern of morphological diversity within the studied landraces. The clustering pattern was primarily explained by 18 discriminant descriptors, including three quantitative and 15 qualitative traits, which captured substantial variation in plant architecture, phenological development, and seed characteristics. The list of descriptors is included in the data base.

Steps to reproduce

This dataset contains field-based germplasm characterization data obtained from common bean (Phaseolus vulgaris L.) accessions collected from the Peruvian Amazon. All accessions were sown under the same field conditions, and morphological evaluations were conducted following the standard descriptor list for common bean germplasm characterization. Data collection was performed at specific crop development stages to accurately capture variation in phenological traits, plant architecture, growth characteristics, seed and other relevant morphological attributes.
